Man surrenders peacefully after barricading himself inside home in North Haven

A man who barricaded himself inside of a home early Wednesday morning has surrendered peacefully and Hartford Turnpike in North Haven has reopened.

East Haven police were conducting an investigation and responded to North Haven to make contact with a 24-year-old man from New Haven on Hartford Turnpike for a family violence incident.

Investigators said when police arrived around 1:30 a.m., the man came to the door with a rifle.

The officers backed away and the South Central Regional SWAT Team was called in.

Negotiators spoke with the man for hours, trying to convince him to safely exit the home and surrender.

Around 7:30 a.m., police said the man did and was taken into custody. No injuries were reported.

Detectives are now working with the State's Attorney's Office to get search and arrest warrants.

A portion of Hartford Turnpike was closed for several hours during the incident. It has since reopened.
