Quarry blast registered as a magnitude 2 on U.S.G.S. earthquake list

The shaking from blasting in Plainville on Tuesday afternoon showed up on the U.S. Geological Survey website list of earthquakes as a magnitude 2.

On Wednesday morning, the U.S.G.S. website said there was a magnitude 2 earthquake near New Britain around 2:30 p.m. Later, the website said it was actually a quarry blast.

“Tilcon Connecticut conducted a controlled scheduled blast in Plainville on Tuesday, May 20th at approximately 2:30 p.m. All regulations were followed, and the operation was within limits,” Tilcon Connecticut said in a statement.

There were reports of shaking from people in New Britain and Plainville who reported feeling it.

The U.S.G.S. said there was an earthquake in Essex earlier this week.

The U.S.G.S. website says there was a magnitude 1.8 earthquake near Essex Village at 1:29 p.m. on Monday and there were reports of light shaking. People in Deep River and Stamford reported feeling it.
